Founded as the Melbourne Church of England Grammar School, opening on 7 April 1858 in South Yarra with 76 pupils and John E. Bromby as first headmaster. An Anglican independent school, its origins trace to an earlier grammar school begun in 1849 by Melbourne's first Anglican bishop, Charles Perry.
